NEUROMANCER

NEUROMANCER
NEUROMANCER (1984) - (BACK COVER) CASE WAS BURNED OUT, USELESS, SUICIDAL - HIS NERVOUS SYSTEM GRIEVOUSLY MAIMED BY A WARTIME RUSSIAN MYCOTOXIN. THE TOP JAPANESE EXPERTS IN NERVE-SPLICING AND MICROBIONICS HAD TAKEN HIS MONEY AND LEFT HIM CRIPPLED. HIS DAYS AS A SOFTWARE COWBOY SEEMED OVER. THEN CASE MET A MAN WHO COULD CURE HIM. IN RETURN, CASE HAD TO DO A JOB. HAD TO. BECAUSE BONDED TO HIS ARTERY WALLS WERE TINY SACS OF THE MYCOTOXIN. TINY SACS, SLOWLY MELTING.

The setting of the novel is the not-so distant future, in the Chiba section of Tokyo, Japan. Technology has run rampant. Megacorporations battle for control of the global economy. Human Beings can now 'jack in' directly to the matrix, and shadowy groups of techno-criminals compete for power and money that the corps aren't exactly willing to let go of without a fight.

Case, an ex-hacker relocated from the BAMA - the Boston-Atlanta Metropolitan Axis (a.k.a. 'The Sprawl'), the official term for the heavily-industrialized east coast of the United States), carves out an desperate existence moving illegal pharmaceutical materials for money.

He had been a talented career hacker, cracking corporate systems on the matrix for crime syndicates, but his downfall began when he attempted to steal from his employers, and they found out. In return, they dosed him with a special mycotoxin that deprived him of his ability to ever enter the matrix again. They let him keep the money he had embezzled from them, and he spent the rest of his funds in various illegal 'black' clinics in an attempt to undo the damage.

One night, wired to the rafters on amphetamines and understandingly paranoid, he notices someone following him. This turns out to be a hired street samurai, known to him as 'Molly'. She was an ex-prostitute and razor girl hired to find him for a very special employer, who wants him for a high-level matrix run. This new employer offers a great deal of money, and throws in the tempting stipulation of repairing his disabled mind. It is an offer that he just can't refuse....

All Tomorrow's Parties is the perfect novel to publish at the end of 1999. It brings back Colin Laney, one of the most popular characters from Idoru, the man whose special sensitivities about people and events let him predict certain aspects of the future. Laney has realized that the disruptions everyone expected to happen at the beginning of the year 2000, which in fact did not happen, are still to come. Though down-and-out in Tokyo, his sense of what is to come tells him that the big event, whatever it is, will happen in San Francisco. He decides to head back to the United States--to San Francisco--to meet the future.

Pattern Recognition (2003) (from inside front cover)

Cayce Pollard is an expensive, spookily intuitive American design consultant with an international reputation. In London to evaluate the redesign of a corporate logo, she's offered a very different assignment: find the creator of the haunting, enigmatic video clips being uploaded to the internet by a party or parties unknown. Followers of this footage, and Cayce herself is one, are generating massive underground buzz, worldwide - and her new employer values buzz infinitely more than money.

But with her London apartment burgled, her email hacked, and the records of her Manhattan therapist stolen, she begins to suspect that more is at stake here, to someone, than she could ever have imagined.

Still, Cayce id her father's daughter. Win Pollard, Cold War security guru, was never a man to be deterred by the unimaginable. But the Cold War is over, and Win is missing, presumed dead, somewhere in Manhattan on the morning of September 11, 2001.

Cayce is soon phase-shifting through parallel universes of marketing, globalization, and terror, heading always for the still point where the three converge. From London to Tokyo to Moscow, and finally into the eerie aftermath of a Soviet eco-disaster, she follows the implications of a secret as disturbing, and compelling, as the twenty-first century promises to be.

A secret that may, ultimately, belong to her alone.

Spook Country (due out 8/7/2007)

Tito is in his early twenties. Born in Cuba, he speaks fluent Russian, lives in one room in a NoLita warehouse, and does delicate jobs involving information transfer.

Hollis Henry is an investigative journalist, on assignment from a magazine called Node. Node doesn't exist yet, which is fine; she's used to that. But it seems to be actively blocking the kind of buzz that magazines normally cultivate before they start up. Really actively blocking it. It's odd, even a little scary, if Hollis lets herself think about it much. Which she doesn't; she can't afford to.

Milgrim is a junkie. A high-end junkie, hooked on prescription antianxiety drugs. Milgrim figures he wouldn't survive twenty-four hours if Brown, the mystery man who saved him from a misunderstanding with his dealer, ever stopped supplying those little bubble packs. What exactly Brown is up to Milgrim can't say, but it seems to be military in nature. At least, Milgrim's very nuanced Russian would seem to be a big part of it, as would breaking into locked rooms.

Bobby Chombo is a "producer," and an enigma. In his day job, Bobby is a troubleshooter for manufacturers of military navigation equipment. He refuses to sleep in the same place twice. He meets no one. Hollis Henry has been told to find him.

Agency

"ONE OF THE MOST VISIONARY, ORIGINAL, AND QUIETLY INFLUENTIAL WRITERS CURRENTLY WORKING" RETURNS WITH A SHARPLY IMAGINED SDEQUEL TO THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING NOVEL, THE PERIPHERAL

William Gibson has trained his eyes on the future for decades, ever since coining the term "cyberspace" and then popularizing it in his classic speculative novel Neuromancer in the early 1980's. Cory Doctorow raved that The Peripheral is "spectacular, a piece of trenchant, far-future speculation that features all the eyeball kicks of Neuromancer.: Now Gibson is back with Agency a science fiction thriller heavily influenced by our most current events.

Verity Janes, gifted app whisperer, takes a job as the beta tester for a new product, a digital assistant, accessed through a pair of ordinary looking glasses. "Eunice," the disarmingly human AI in the glasses, manifests a face, a fragmentary past, and a canny grasp of combat strategy. Realizing that her cryptic new employers don't yet know how powerful and valuable Eunice is, Verity instinctively decides that it's best they don't.

Meanwhile, a century ahead in London, in a different time line entirely, Wilf Netherton works amid plutocrats and plunderers, survivors of the slow and steady apocalypse known as the jackpot. His boss, the enigmatic Ainsley Lowbeer, can look into alternate pasts and nudge their ultimate directions. Verity and Eunice are her current project.

Wilf can see what Verity and Eunice can't: their own version of the jackpot, just around the corner, and the roles they both may play in it.
